About the Registered Behavior Technician Pathway

The Accelerate U Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Pathway is a mostly online certificate program that will prepare you to work with children who have developmental behavior challenges. Working under the supervision of a Behavior Analyst, RBTs work one-on-one with children in home, school and clinical settings to help build social, communication and problem solving skills. The 6-month program consists of 6 weeks of online training to teach you job-specific skills, a 12-week paid practicum at one of our employer partners to give you on-the-ground experience, and a 6-week undergraduate course to help refine your skills. In addition, each cohort has a dedicated career coach who knows the field and is committed to supporting you throughout each step of the process. After the program, you'll receive primary consideration for open positions with our employer partners.

Program Length: 6 months (12 weeks online courses/training; 12 weeks practicum in the field)

Degree Type: Certificate including Registered Behavior Technician certification

Cost: $5,900 for Illinois learners

Program Highlights

A Bridge to a Great Job

You will be eligible to work part-time as a Registered Behavior Technician after only 6 weeks, and since we design our programs according to employers' needs, you'll be ready to make an impact on Day 1 of your new job. RBTs in Illinois earn an average salary of $40,270 per year.*

Hands-On Experience

You will spend 12 weeks of the program gaining experience through a paid, hands-on practicum, learning on-the-job at one of our employer partners. You'll get to "test drive" being a registered behavior technician before earning your certification.

Industry Credentials and College Credit

By the end of the program, you will have earned a nationally recognized RBT certification credentialed by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) and 25 college credits you can put toward a degree program in the future.

Flexible, Online Learning Experience

The training is almost 100% online, taught by experienced instructors and coaches who know the field and will prepare you for the job market.

Affordable

The Registered Behavior Technician pathway costs $5,900 for Illinois learners. Students who are fully Pell-eligible may pay $0 out of pocket.

Curriculum

What You'll Learn

By the completion of the Registered Behavior Technician pathway, you will be able to:

  • Act in accordance with current professional ethical standards, consistent with the RBT Ethics Code, in order to protect the consumers of applied behavior analysis services.
  • Apply behavior analytic measurement as dictated by current best practices in behavior analytic literature, to ensure that data are collected on client outcomes.
  • Apply behavior analytic assessment as dictated by current best practices in behavior analytic literature, to inform appropriate interventions.
  • Apply and evaluate behavior analytic interventions as dictated by current best practices in behavior analytic literature, to ensure appropriate outcomes for the client.
  • Engage in professional conduct consistent with the RBT role and scope of practice, in order to represent the field in an ethical manner.
  • Be mindful and reflective of your personal values and practice and how you relate to your role as a helping professional.
  • Act with awareness of cultural humility, diversity, equity, and inclusion when practicing in your role as an RBT.

Why Become a Registered Behavior Technician?

Registered Behavior Technicians play a crucial role in improving the lives of children with autism and other developmental disabilities. Working under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), the RBT executes one-on-one intervention plans in home, school and clinical settings. People who enjoy working with children and problem solving find being a RBT to be a very fulfilling job. Additionally, RBTs enjoy a lot of room for growth and can eventually become BCBAs, therapists, teachers, or they can work toward a degree in another field.

Who Are We Looking For?

Registered Behavior Technicians must, first and foremost, enjoy working with children. Additionally, RBTs must be flexible, empathetic, good listeners and motivated to help children improve and grow. Successful Registered Behavior Technicians in training will:

  • Have a high school diploma/GED
  • Be at least 18 years of age by first day of Working Practicum
  • Have a valid driver’s license and vehicle for travel to client appointments
  • Have English language proficiency
  • Be Eligible to work full-time in the United States.
  • Have a flexible schedule Monday-Friday 
  • Be able to sit on the floor, stoop, stand, walk, and run
  • Successfully complete a background check
  • Submit all employer health requirements 

Successful Accelerate U RBT Learners are:

  • Motivated to become an RBT and to complete a rapid training program.
  • Passionate about improving the daily lives of individuals living with disabilities.
  • Open to learning in new ways and receiving feedback -- online, in-person, in a behavioral health facility.
