Continuing the Discussion on Wellness, Self-Care, and Resilience for Educators

Dr. Jennifer Engelland-Schultz, Assistant Professor of School Psychology in the National College of Education, and Dr. Kelli Johnson, Dean of the College of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences, continued their conversation on wellness, self-care, and resilience for educators. They shared effective, easy-to-use strategies for practicing self-care. Attendees developed a self-care wellness plan and learned ideas on how to model these skills for students.

About the speakers: 

Dr. Kelli Johnson is the Dean of the College of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences at National Louis University, and she is committed to building a graduate college that is aligned to the school's mission of providing innovation, access, and equity in education while fostering a community of belonging for historically marginalized faculty, staff, and students. Dr. Johnson earned a PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Miami and completed her internship and post-doctoral residency at the University Counseling Center (UCC) at Florida State University. Post-licensure, she remained on board as part of the UCC staff at FSU until 2008, before accepting the role of Assistant Training Director and then Training Director at the University of Illinois-Chicago's UCC. Dr. Johnson transitioned to academia in 2011 as Director of Clinical Training for the Clinical Psychology PsyD program at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Schaumburg, Illinois. Immediately prior to her current position, Dr. Johnson served as Department Chair for the Clinical Psychology PsyD program at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology at Xavier University of Louisiana. She also maintains a small clinical caseload as part of a group therapy practice in Chicago. Beyond clinical and academic activity, Dr. Johnson has held multiple roles in the professional community, including President of the Association of Chicagoland Externship and Practicum Training, and membership on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology (NCSPP) as Chair of its Ethnic Racial Diversity Committee (ERDC). She is also honored to be serving as a member of the Training Advisory Council for the APA Minority Fellowship Program. Dr. Johnson’s interests include multicultural competence in clinical practice, education, and training; intersectionality; social responsiveness in psychology; professional identity development; and mentorship.

Dr. Jennifer Engelland-Schultz is an Assistant Professor of School Psychology at National Louis University. She earned her Ph.D. in School Psychology from Illinois State University and her M.A. in Teaching and B.S. in Psychology and Sociology from Olivet Nazarene University. Jennifer previously worked as a school psychologist serving students and families in public schools across several regions of Illinois. She is passionate about providing effective social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health services to students and families within a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS), advocating for racial and social justice, promoting equity in the schools, and creating family-school-community partnerships. Jennifer’s research has focused on the impact of positive school climate and the effectiveness of social-emotional learning programs. She conducted research for the Livingston County Children’s Network. Jennifer is committed to creating safe, supportive, and culturally responsive learning environments that meet the needs of all students and families.
