About the Ed.S. and Ed.D. Teaching and Learning: Linguistic Diversity & Equity

Are you passionate about language and interested in working toward linguistic justice in PK-12 schools, higher education, communities, or public policy?

The Ed.S./Ed.D. in Teaching and Learning: Linguistic Diversity & Equity in Education prepares individuals to apply research, theory, and practice related to linguistic and cultural diversity, language acquisition and bilingualism in schools, colleges, universities, nonprofits, and government agencies. Students have the opportunity to tailor the program to their specific professional and academic goals. This program provides candidates with an in-depth study of the major areas of research, theory and practice in linguistic and cultural diversity, bilingualism, biliteracy, and language learning.

A major emphasis in the coursework is on critical perspectives and approaches to bilingualism and biliteracy from sociocultural, multimodal, and transnational perspectives. The cross-cutting themes of the major are equity and critical perspectives, Spanish biliteracy, African American English, international approaches to language education, family and community engagement, multimodal communication, and public scholarship. This major responds to the needs of individuals, families, communities, and organizations striving to create effective, humanizing learning contexts that take into consideration the linguistic, cultural, economic, political, and social contexts of language.

The Linguistic Diversity and Equity major takes a broad perspective on linguistic and cultural diversity, applicable to PK-12 contexts, and postsecondary contexts in academic and non-academic settings. Professionals in fields outside of academic contexts can also apply the major to their work.

With an Ed.S. or Ed.D. Teaching and Learning: Linguistic Diversity & Equity you'll know:

  • Understand relationships with and among authors, texts, and audiences in the form of speech, conversation, writing and enactment
  • Foster appreciation of different types of knowledge, scholarship and research
  • Gain an advanced level of understanding and skills of collaborative learning and communication
  • Enhance the knowledge of professional ethics and responsibilities

Graduates of the program assume or deepen their roles in PK-12, higher education, community, and/or policy positions. They often become advocates and consultants for equitable justice.

*This program is offered in our Low Residency format.

The National Louis University Low Residency approach provides learners in select programs with the convenience of online learning and the opportunity to meet occasionally with their classmates and professors, as well as with community members to engage in networking, team building, and high-impact instruction. Low Residency programs are essentially fully online programs paired with integral, intentional, and structured in-person learning events (residencies).

Those residencies are used to help learners build their professional identities, expand their networks, and to engage in peer-based learning in flexible and creative ways, all built around their online course offering.  Programs offered in this unique format are designed for working professionals and/or those learners whose schedules might not permit them the option of meeting face-to-face for the entire program and/or those that value the flexibility of online courses, but also place importance on in-person learning.

Residency frequency and location vary by program, please click the curriculum link below for details.
