About the Master's or Ed.S. in Educational Leadership

Do you want to serve your community as an agent of change and a champion of educational equity?

The M.Ed. or Ed.S. in Educational Leadership is for individuals who want to take on leadership roles in a variety of educational settings, including PK-12 schools and education focused organizations, nonprofit organizations, museums, and corporate learning. Through coursework and field-based learning, you will build on your knowledge and experience and gain school leadership and management skills that will position you for career advancement.

This program prepares exceptional leaders who understand the complex issues that shape education and foster high levels of achievement. Blending research and pedagogy with realistic and relevant problems of practice, the curriculum will prepare you to effectively navigate the challenges of contemporary schools and workplaces, guide instruction that serves diverse populations, design improvement plans aligned to system-level objectives and strategies, evaluate financial operations, and drive data-informed decision making.

The M.Ed. in Educational Leadership program is a Florida state-approved program in Educational Leadership, master's level. The Ed.S. in Educational Leadership is a Florida state-approved modified program in Educational Leadership.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS AND CURRICULUM

Candidates select one of five options:

Principal Endorsement (State credential) requires 34 SH for the M.Ed. (in Illinois and Florida) and 30 SH for the Ed.S. (in Illinois and Florida). This concentration is for those seeking an advanced degree and who wish to add the general administrative endorsement to their PEL (Professional Educator License). 

General Education Leadership- Requires 34 SH for the M.Ed. and 30 SH for the Ed.S.. This concentration is for students seeking leadership roles in education-focused organizations that do not require a Professional Educator License.

Strategic Educational Leadership Major Students in the Educational Leadership program have the opportunity to major in Strategic Educational Leadership (SEDL). This major prepares students for leadership roles beyond principal or superintendent positions in organizations whose missions include teaching and learning, training, curriculum and instructional design, and other education-related functions.

Educational Leadership & Administration - IL Ed.S. requires 44 SH. This program prepares candidates for instructional, operational, organizational, and ethical leadership roles in school districts and other complex educational systems. In Illinois, candidates in this major are not seeking the superintendent endorsement. Candidates earning an Ed.S. in the Educational Leadership & Administration major may go on to the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership Program to complete their doctorate at a future date. Standard rules concerning the acceptance of previously completed coursework and the time limitation for completion of the program apply to candidates wishing to re-enter the doctoral program.

Educational Leadership & Administration - FL Ed.S. requires 39 SH. This program prepares candidates for instructional, operational, organizational, and ethical leadership roles in school districts and other complex educational systems. In Florida, candidates who complete the 600-level Ed.S. major in Educational Leadership & Administration may take the Florida Educational Leadership Examination and earn their certification in Educational Leadership, which is the certification for the principalship in Florida. Candidates earning an 600-level Ed.S. in the Educational Leadership & Administration major may go on to the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership Program to complete their doctorate at a future date. Standard rules concerning the acceptance of previously completed coursework and the time limitation for completion of the program apply to candidates wishing to re-enter the doctoral program.
