About the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Secondary Education
Teaching at the secondary level presents educators with the opportunity to share their content expertise and empower diverse young adult learners. Are you ready for a rewarding career that lets you take part in shaping the next generation?
The M.A.T in Secondary Education is for those who hold a bachelor’s and wish to become licensed in Illinois to teach students in grades 9-12 (or K-12 for World Language) in one of the following content areas: English, Biological Science, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences, and World Language.
Our program will provide you with the knowledge, experience, and skills to teach with confidence. You will gain a firm understanding of the theoretical and pedagogical foundations of secondary teaching, learn technology-enhanced and culturally responsive teaching practices, and have diverse, substantive field experiences that will prepare you to support student success.
You can complete the coursework for your Illinois Professional Educator’s License (PEL) – endorsed for grades 9-12 in your content area of expertise (or grades K-12 for World Language) in as few as 12 months and the complete M.A.T. within 15 months.
