NCE Lessons Learned in Leading for Equity Resource Guide

“Educational equity means that every child receives whatever they need to develop their full academic and social potential and to thrive every day. They are seen for who they truly are, and their unique interests and gifts are surfaced and cultivated.” – Elena Aguilar

This working definition of equity was shared and discussed during National Louis University’s Leadership Summit: Re-Visioning Education for Equity on May 14, 2021. More than 60 education leaders from across the nation joined the virtual event to discuss the opportunities, challenges, and lessons learned in leading for equity through the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement. The event included keynote speakers, seven breakout sessions with designated topics to explore, and a re-gathering to share the ideas discussed in those breakout sessions.

The goals of the summit included but were not limited to:

• Creating a network of leaders with a shared commitment to equity
• Providing leaders with an opportunity to reflect on lessons learned in leading for equity
• Generating a series of principles that will guide future work
• Planning for the coming years by synthesizing ideas and sharing them

To share the many amazing ideas that were generated, the NLU faculty who led the event watched the recordings of each session and summarized the important takeaways that were shared. They also included links to many of the resources that were provided by session facilitators and participants. The hope is that sharing this publication will help continue the essential conversation around leadership for equity as the field of education continues to face unprecedented challenges. You are encouraged to use these ideas to support reflection on the past year as well as planning for the year to come. Please feel free to share it widely with colleagues at your school and on social media.
