Diversity in Literacy Leaders Scholarship

The Diversity in Literacy Leaders Scholarship is awarded to three (3) incoming students to the Reading Program. Applicants must be diverse ethnic/racial heritage scholars traditionally underrepresented in higher education. "Traditionally underrepresented" is defined as individuals of Black/African American, Hispanic American, Asian American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander (Illinois Public Act 093-0862; July 1, 2004).

To be considered for the scholarship, you must:

  • have applied to or have been admitted to the Reading MED program at the time of application;
  • seek to complete a Reading Specialist major; 
  • be of diverse ethnic/racial heritage traditionally underrepresented in higher education; and
  • demonstrate significant potential to become skilled literacy specialists and leaders at local, state, and even national levels.

Step 1: The Essay

Essay: After reviewing the Reading Specialist Scholarship information, submit an essay of not more than 500-750 words in which you:

  1. Explain your RATIONALE(S)/REASONING for applying for the Reading Specialist Scholarship.
  2. Describe your FUTURE CAREER GOALS in your area of study.
  3. Discuss how receiving the Reading Specialist Scholarship with its various supports will HELP YOU MEET YOUR GOALS (#B) AND CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR FIELD OF STUDY in positive ways. Be as specific as possible.

Step 2: Letters of Recommendation

You must submit 1-2 letters of recommendation (professional and/or academic). Please direct your recommenders to specifically address your qualifications for receiving this Scholarship.

Step 3: The Application

The application deadline is December 15, 2021.

Complete the application form online.

All submitted applications will receive an acknowledgement email confirming receipt. If you do not receive a response to your application within one business day, it is your responsibility to contact us so that we can work together to identify the issue.

Only complete applications will be reviewed. All application materials including the online application, essay and resume must be submitted by the application deadline. The decisions of the scholarship committee are final.
