About the M.Ed. and Ed.S. in Reading
Reading is the foundation of all learning. Enroll in NLU’s Reading program to become a leader in literacy development, assessment, and instruction to improve PK-12 student achievement.
NLU's Reading Program is for educators seeking an in-depth understanding of the research, theory, and practice related to reading and writing processes and expertise in literacy assessment and instruction. Through coursework, practicum experiences, and study with peers and faculty, students in NLU's Reading program gain a dynamic repertoire of strategies to enhance literacy for all learners. Our program prepares reading teachers and reading specialists for school-wide and district-wide literacy leadership roles that advance equitable learning outcomes, strengthen curriculum, shape policy, and improve instructional practice.
Open to licensed teachers with two or more years of teaching experience in school-based or clinical settings, the reading degree-level and endorsement options allow students to customize their learning experience based on prior educational accomplishments, interests, and career goals.
Reading Specialist (M.Ed., Ed.S.)
Reading Specialists collaborate with PK-12 school and district leaders to deliver system-level change in literacy education, advocate for effective literacy programs, and coach classroom teachers and paraprofessionals to improve literacy instruction. Students who enroll in the Ed.S. program have the option to major in Reading Specialist, Reading Specialist and ESL (K-12), and Reading Specialist and LBS1 (K-12) endorsements.
Reading Teacher (M.Ed.)
Reading teachers promote the literacy growth of all PK-12 students and support colleagues in literacy teaching and learning. Within their school community, Reading Teachers provide diagnostic and remediation services for students who struggle with reading, comprehension, and writing.
