Social Security Number
Instructions on receiving a Social Security Number when you have proof of an employment offer for on-campus work or internship for F-1 and J-1 students.
All students must have a valid social security card before beginning any type of employment. Please read the following 4 steps for obtaining a Social Security Number.
If you wish to apply for a job on campus, visit jobs.nl.edu and select the Students tab to find job postings.
Step 1. Get a job offer letter by the department on campus for which you were hired -or- get a Letter of Agreement from Career Services with your employer information for internship.
Step 2. Request an authorization letter from ISSS to bring to the Social Security Administration Office.
To do so, you will need to bring/email the following 2 items to the ISSS office:
- A completed Document Request Form
- Job Offer letter/Letter of Agreement to the ISSS office.
Step 3. Take the following documents in the list below to the Social Security Administration Office which is located at 605 W Washington Blvd, Chicago, IL 60661. Check their hours of operation here.
Job offer letter (from step 1)
Authorization letter (from step 2)
Passport and student Visa
Copy of your most recent I-94
Your I-20, with CPT (internship) authorization, if applicable.
SS-5 Application for a Social Security Card which you can complete in the Social Security Administration Office or online here.

Copy of your most recent I-94
Your DS-2019

Step 4. Provide your SSN to your department or employer in order to receive paychecks.
NOTE: Please be aware of the FICA tax (collectively referred to as Social Security and Medicare Taxes) exemption. Be sure to check your earnings with your employer to understand if these taxes have been taken out of your paycheck.
