About the B.S. in Health Care Leadership

Our Bachelor of Science in Health Care Leadership degree program will harness your passion for helping others and introduce you to work in the health care field. Whether you’re currently working in health care and want to advance your career or are looking to enter the health care industry for the first time, the B.S. in Health Care Leadership can help your define your interests and reach your career goals. We offer this degree at our Chicago and Florida campus locations, as well as in an online format.

Career Advancement

Set yourself up for a promotion to a leadership role in a hospital, clinic, or private practice by distinguishing yourself from other candidates with a Health Care Leadership degree. Graduates also go on to pursue advanced degrees, such as an MBA or Master’s in Health Administration.

Hands-On Learning

Take advantage of guest lectures, field trips, and case studies to learn what it’s really like to work in health care administration. You’ll also be mentored by a student in the Master’s of Health Administration program who’s currently employed in the health care industry.

A Customized Experience

Enhance your degree by adding a minor or concentration, including our new Long Term Care concentration. Consisting of four courses in either online or blended format, this concentration will prepare you for licensing by the National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards and set you up for an in-demand career as a Long Term Care Administrator.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS AND DETAILS

The undergraduate major in Health Care Leadership requires 180 quarter hours including 60 quarter hours of general education for completion. Students may complete a concentration such as: Aging Studies, Entrepreneurship, Health Services Administration, Human Resources Management, International Management, Leadership, Leadership Foundations, Long-Term Care Administration, or Public Policy.

What You Will Learn

Throughout the program, you’ll acquire an in-depth understanding of the complex and demanding health care regulatory environment, including its economic and legal contexts. Our courses offer a mix of classwork and hands-on learning that will equip you with the management skills and perspectives you need to succeed. Highlights of what you’ll learn include:

Leadership and Management

Management theory and principles; Job selection, training, and performance evaluation; Project management; Critical thinking for health care managers; Managing stakeholders, budget, quality, risk, and schedules; Facilitating team meetings.

Law and Ethics

Contemporary ethical and legal issues in health care delivery; Conflicts between value systems, ethical standards, and law; Health care reform; Balancing and protecting institutional, practitioner, and patient interests.

Analysis and Planning

The fundamentals of strategic analysis; Creating a strategic plan for improvement; Evaluating health care operations and delivery; Methods for measuring quality in health care; Improving processes and best practices.

Finance and Resources

Managing finances and resources; Budget development and expenditure control; Purchasing and facility planning; Using financial information and data; Evaluating the financial health of an organization.

Training and Marketing

Adult learning principles within health care; Lesson planning and design; Assessing behavioral outcomes in training; Evaluation tools and assessment plans; Developing and executing marketing plans; Identifying and analyzing marketing opportunities.

Capstone Project

Students will complete a business plan for a health care delivery service or facility as the capstone project for the program. Students will also complete a vocational portfolio as part of the capstone course, to be used for promoting their employment and/ or advancement in the health care industry.


Career Outlook

Job opportunities in the health care industry look only to increase as the population ages and life expectancies increase. Medical and Health Service Manager positions are expected to grow by a whopping 32% from 2019-2029, much faster than the average job growth rate.* Additionally, health care management positions are well-compensated, as the median salary is $100,980.
