Emergency Resource Guide

NLU strives to maintain an environment free from intimidation, threats or violent acts. The University will not tolerate intimidating, threatening or hostile behavior of any kind. If you are involved in a situation on campus where a life-threatening act of violence is taking place, such as an active shooter, the following actions are recommended:

When an armed offender is in the vicinity:

  • If a safe escape path can be determined, then attempt to evacuate
  • Evacuate whether others agree to or not
  • Leave your belongings behind
  • Help others escape if possible
  • Prevent others or outsiders from entering the area
  • Call 911 and Public Safety when you are safe

If evacuation is not possible, find a place to hide:

  • Go to the nearest room or office or closet and lock and barricade the door
  • If the door does not lock, secure and barricade the door with as many obstacles as possible (desk chairs, tables)
  • Close the shades/curtains, turn off the lights and get down on the floor and seek cover. No one should be visible from the outside
  • Keep quite and keep your cell phone on silent
  • Hide behind large objects
  • When it is safe, call 911 and inform the dispatcher of your location and provide as much information as possible. Stay there until poilce or Public Safety give an all clear.

As a last resort and only if your life is in danger:

  • Attempt to incapaciate the shooter
  • Act with physical aggression
  • Improvise weapons
  • Commit to your actions

If you are not immediatley impacted by the incident, please take the following action:

  • Stay away from the building
  • Notify everyone around you to stay away
  • Obey all verbal direction given by law enforcement/Public Safety officers
  • Take protective action and stay away from doors and windows

Lockdown - A lockdown implemented when a situation occurs that may pose a hazard to health or is life threatening. It is intended to limit access and hazards/threats by controlling and managing staff and students to increase safety and reduce possible injury. A lockdown can be called for a variety of reasons. A building in lockdown will have restricted access until an “All Clear” is given by emergency personnel or staff.

If you receive a bomb threat via telephone, e-mail, or any other source:

  • If possible, hold the line open, do not hang up and secure as much information as possible
  • Call Public Safety
  • Do not handle the suspicious letter/package
  • Call Public Safety
  • Identify and isolate those who came in contact with the items
  • Wait for 1st responders to arrive

If you discover a crime in progress:

  • Call 911. If possible, remain where you are until the police arrive
  • Do not attempt to apprehend or interfere with a criminal except in self-defense. Be a good witness and provide a detailed description of the offender and/or vehicle with license plate

 

  • Call 911 and Public Safety
  • Do not move the injured unless they are in danger
  • Avoid leaving a seriously ill/injured person except to get help
  • Continue to talk to the injured/sick person assuring them help is on the way

In the event of a chemical spill or any other accident or emergency involving a hasardous material:

  • Evacuate the area immediately
  • Do not attempt to mop up or contain the spill
  • Call Public Safety and/or 911
