Weather Advisories

The University will alert faculty, staff  and students via the Emergency Notification Systems as to the status of campus closures or class cancellations during severe weather. Status will also be posted on the NLU homepage and the NLU Portal. Closure status will be posted on the Emergency Closing Center webpage. Indoors:

  • Close all windows, drapes, blinds and shades
  • Move away from outside perimeter of the building and toward a safe area, such as interior washroom, stairwell, basement, or any other interioir room - avoid first floor lobby areas and any other areas with windows.
  • Do not attempt to leave building
  • Do not get in an elevator
  • Remain calm and follow directiosn from Public Safety

Outside:

  • Stay away from trees, telephones or light poles
  • Avoid downed electrical wires
  • Do not stand in water (puddles)
  • Stay inside until danger has passed
  • Seek shelter on the lowest building level, interior rooms or hallways with interior walls. Use interior spaces with short spans. Stairwells, bathrooms and closets are good spots
  • Put as many walls as possible between you and the exterior of building
  • Avoid windows and doors with glass panels
  • Avoid interior and exterior doors
  • Avoid areas where chemicals are stored. Chemicals and cleaning supplies should be removed from areas designated for shelter use
  • Unsecured items (shelving, supplies, wall lockers, etc.) should either be secured or removed from shelter areas
  • Stay away from entrances. All doors around a shelter area should be closed and secured during a tornado warning
  • Wait for "all clear" by police or university officials
