Title:
Adjunct Professor

Programs/Classes Taught:
RES600; RES654; DOC696, 697, 698, 699, 699X; PSY499.  I am credentialed to teach many different courses.

Biography:
"The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn."  The Alvin Toffler quote is the basis for my teaching work.  My PhD was focused on becoming a specialist in organizational and leadership development/behavior.

For 15+ years, and currently, I teach courses on leadership and research to Masters and Doctoral students.  I do my best to impress upon them the reality I came to know, that learning is a life-long  process, engaged in through choice and, by its very nature, encompasses unlearning and relearning, for the learning to be authentic, appropriate and applicable.

I also have, and still do, mentor doctoral students who are completing their dissertations, learning about the uniqueness of the individuals who choose to earn terminal degrees and supporting them to achieve their academic goals.  Students at that level of learning must have the qualities of curiosity, courage and compassion; they are transforming themselves into subject matter experts.  That process is one complex learn, unlearn, relearn endeavor, as the students engage in becoming leaders in their fields.

I love teaching, I have come to understand, because I love learning (always have), which I do every time I teach, whether about a course topic or about the people completing the courses or their degrees.  According to Thomas Edison, "Life itself is an institute of learning."  Indeed, that is so.  I am delighted to live that belief every day.

Education:
2002   Capella University: Ph.D. in Organization & Management.
Focused Study on Leadership and Organizational Development

1996   Holy Names College: M.A. in Culture & Spirituality

1995   Excelsior College (formerly University of New York
Regents College): B.S. in Developmental Psychology

Research and Interests:
Research is oriented towards all aspects of leadership development and the effects of leadership on people and places (organizations, communities and countries).

Teaching Philosophy:
My approach to teaching is that I hold high expectations for the work students submit. I firmly believe in the Pygmalion and Galatea effects, which are theories/realities that expectations are powerful energy that shape performance and varied aspects of the future.  Covey (1989) agreed:

Holding people to the responsible course is not demeaning; it is affirming.  Proactivity is part of human nature and although the proactive muscles may be dormant, they are there. By respecting the proactive nature of other people, we provide them with at least one clear, undistorted reflection from the social mirror. (p. 76)

Students are, upon completion of their college degrees, at all levels, are automatically accorded a degree of credibility.  That level of trust comes with a concomitant high level of responsibility and accountability. That dynamic is what I focus on shaping, as the course leader, through the vision I hold of students’ current presence and practice within a particular course and through the expectations I have of their capabilities.

I provide extensive feedback on assignments, regarding quality and appropriateness of content, APA formatting, grammar, punctuation, and all other writing skills. My goal is to assist students in strengthening their academic research writing skills.
