Verifications, Deferments And Enrollment Dates

Enrollment and Degree Verification

National Louis University has authorized the National Student Clearinghouse to provide enrollment and degree verifications. For a free, printable enrollment verification certificate from the Clearinghouse, please follow the instructions below.

  • Log on to the NLU Student Portal
  • Click on the Student Services tab
  • Click "Print Official Enrollment Verification"
  • Select "Current Enrollment" or "All Enrollment"
  • Click "Obtain an Enrollment Certificate"

You can print and send the enrollment verification certificate to health insurers, housing providers and other organizations requiring proof of enrollment. The certificate will reflect the current term’s enrollment only after the end of the add/drop period.

If you need a special letter to verify a status or academic specification beyond proof of enrollment, please use the Special Letter Request Form.

All third-party verification requests must be made directly to the National Student Clearinghouse.

Request Early Verification

An early verification request can be made once the student is registered. Verification will be sent to the student's NLU email address. Verifications are provided for ONE term following the current term. Please do not use this form for verification of past terms.

Enrollment Dates

Please note that the information you provide must match exactly with your student record or your request cannot be processed. If we are unable to match the information to your student record, you will need to order an official transcript to obtain your enrollment dates. Enrollment dates will NOT be provided over the phone.

An email containing ONLY your enrollment dates will be sent to the email address you provide in your request. No other information will be included in the email, including your name or other biographical information.

Loan Deferments

NLU automatically submits to the National Student Clearinghouse a report of student enrollment status. The Clearinghouse then supplies enrollment information to lending agencies. If your lender is not able to verify your enrollment and process your deferment through the Clearinghouse, please contact the Registrar's Office for assistance. Please note that you must be registered and attending at least half-time in the current term to be eligible for deferment.

To view the student loan deferment notifications that the Clearinghouse has provided to lenders, please follow the instructions below.

  • Log on to the NLU Student Portal
  • Click on the Student Services tab
  • Click “View Deferment Information”
  • Select "View the student loan deferment notifications that the Clearinghouse has provided to my loan holders (lenders and guarantors)"

Please direct all questions to deferments@nl.edu.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Once a month (around the 20th of each month) and at the beginning of each term (after the add/drop period.) If a student has registered late or has had an exception processed to the term registration, this information may not be reported until the submission of the next report. (If you are only completing a grade as a guest in a class or completing an “in-progress” course this would not count toward your enrollment status.)

**Please note that National Louis University cannot certify enrollment until after the add/drop period for the term in which you are enrolled. Only current and past enrollment can be verified.

You can easily submit your completed form electronically below or you can submit the deferment form to our office via email to deferments@nl.edu.

Forms will be completed after the add/drop period (which is after the first week of classes.) Forms will be returned as requested.

National Louis University participates in the National Student Loan Clearinghouse (NSLC). All FFELP/Direct Loan forms that are received at the university for currently enrolled students are forwarded to the NSLC. Once a month (around the 20th of each month) and at the beginning of each term (after the add/drop period) the University submits to the Clearinghouse a report of all students’ enrollment status. In turn, the Clearinghouse supplies enrollment information to lending agencies. National Louis University will no longer be sending this information directly to the lenders.

A student must be registered and attending at least half-time in the current term to be eligible for deferment. If a student drops below half-time status, the lender may consider the student withdrawn until he or she once again reaches half-time status. You must be registered and attending for 3-6 semester hours as a Graduate student or 6-12 quarter hours as an Undergraduate student to be considered enrolled. This is non-negotiable. Consolidated loans may not be eligible for deferment. A student should discuss deferment options with his or her lending agency.

If you drop below half-time status, your status may be shown by the National Student Loan Clearinghouse as Withdrawn until such time you again achieve half-time status.

Please note: If there is more than 30 days between your last term end date and next term start date, you may appear Withdrawn until the start of the next class. In these cases, you may request an Early Verification Request to the Registrar's Office to provide to your lender. This request is located on this page for your convenience. Please see above: "Request Early Verification."

If you have graduated, please keep in mind that lenders will ask for the last day you attended class, not the date you actually graduated. Questions about deferment rules should be addressed to your individual lender(s).
