Biography:
Dr. Stegemoller is an associate professor of ESL/Bilingual education at National Louis University in Illinois. He grew up in a bilingual community in southern New Mexico. He has taught English as a second language to adults as well as children and young adults in diverse contexts in Finland, England, New York, Michigan, and Illinois. He co-directed the ESL STEM Success Grant (ESSG), which was a 5-year federal grant designed to improve instruction for English learners in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects. He has also collaborated on several federally funded research teams. One project explored cross-linguistic transfer in the reading performance of 2nd – 4th grade Spanish-English bilingual children, and another was a longitudinal study of the development of secondary English teachers. While he has a deep interest in the Spanish language and Mexican culture, he loves all language and has studied several besides Spanish, including German, Finnish, Swedish, and American Sign Language, among others.

Scholarship:
The overarching goal of my scholarship is to explore and illustrate overlapping ways that contexts and previous experiences inform students' and teachers' appropriation of language practices and linguistic knowledge. Current projects include:
- creation of tools to facilitate collaboration among educators of English learners
- development of practies to meet the needs of students with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE)
- exploration of bilingual practices in mainstream classrooms
