He co-directed the ESL STEM Success Grant (ESSG), which was a 5-year federal grant designed to improve instruction for English learners in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects. He has also collaborated on several federally funded research teams. One project explored cross-linguistic transfer in the reading performance of 2nd – 4th grade Spanish-English bilingual children, and another was a longitudinal study of the development of secondary English teachers.
