Faculty Resources

Welcome to our Faculty Resources page. Please email learn@nl.edu with any questions.

Writing and Math Specialists who are embedded in certain courses can help make a course more robust by offering supplemental writing/math guidance and direct student support. Embedded course support can include:

  • Synchronous class visits by the assigned specialist to co-facilitate a topic or offer floating student support.
  • Weekly announcements of math and writing related tips and resources supplementing the current course goals and assignments.
  • Constructive feedback on math or writing related assignments as requested by students.
  • One-on-one meetings with students for support with writing or math.
  • Outreach to students who may need additional support based on EAB referrals from the instructor.

To learn more about Embedded Support options for your course, email learn@nl.edu.

Learning Support Specialists and Peer Tutors can offer faculty support with their courses in a number of ways:

  • In-class math and writing workshops
  • Co-teaching of math and writing concepts
  • Floating student support during independent practice
  • Assistance with facilitating group or whole-class activities

Please use this form to express interest in having a Learning Specialist or Peer Tutor visit your classroom to provide additional support. We are excited to collaborate with you!

Faculty may use EAB alerts to refer students to Learning Support, and a Math or Writing Specialist will reach out to offer support and an appointment. Students may benefit from referrals if they need 1-on-1 tutoring in math, writing, ELL support, research, time management, study skills, or other general academic skills.

How to use EAB alerts:

  1. Have a conversation with the students about areas of support they are seeking, if possible. Notify the students that a Learning Support Specialist will be reaching out to offer support, which will encourage the students to expect and follow up with Learning Support.
  2. On the student's EAB profile, select "Issue an Alert" in the right-hand menu.
  3. Select one of the below options as the reason for this alert:
    • Referral to Learning Support
    • Referral for ELL Support
      • Faculty can use our ELL Referral Chart to determine if an ELL case should be created in EAB.
    • APA Citation Issue
    • Academic Honesty/Plagiarism Incident.
  4. Select the specific class associated with this alert, if applicable.
  5. Provide additional comments that detail the student's needs or areas of struggle. Any information that will help a Learning Support specialist better understand and support the student will be useful.

An example of a Referral to Learning Support. The image shows the 'Issue an Alert' pop-up that faculty may fill out for their students. It lists 'Referral to Learning Support' as the reason for the report, and includes 3 sentences of additional comments describing the student's issues.

  1. Include scheduling a tutoring appointment as part of the course goals.
  2. Recommend students go to Study Tables to meet with Specialists or Peer Tutors, online at https://live-support.nl.edu/study-table/.
  3. Introduce a student directly to a Learning Support Specialist. (Learn more about our individual specialists here.)
