Learning Support Peer Tutors

Peer tutors are hand-picked for their work ethic, patience, strong student skills, and desire to help other students succeed. Under the supervision of the department, our peer tutors are trained specifically in active listening, questioning, and modeling techniques to provide peers with guided supplemental instruction and constructive criticism in a friendly, non-evaluative, and supportive environment. If you’re a current student interested in becoming a peer tutor, fill out the application on Handshake (Writing) and (Math)*.

*Please see the link for eligibility and application requirements.

The goal of the Integrative Support Model is for peer tutors, in addition to Learning Support Specialists, to provide feedback and assistance to students in class as well as outside of the classroom during scheduled hours. They act as an additional resource to faculty to help reach all students, especially those who may feel more comfortable working under the guidance of an experienced peer.

What Does In-Class Support Look Like?

The peer tutor actively collaborates with faculty to provide in-class support by instructor request, for example, in the form of:

  • Breakout room facilitation and assistance
  • Individual and group check-ins with students
  • Assistance with understanding and brainstorming for assignments (Milestones, etc.)

Peer tutors also promote Study Tables, workshops, and other Learning Support resources outside of class for students to attend and receive additional help on a regular basis. To request an in-class visit, please fill out the Learning Support Course Support Form*.

*While we make our best efforts to support all requests, we kindly ask that you reach out at least one full week in advance of your classroom visit so that we can do our best to ensure availability.

“Peer tutors have been an invaluable part of my English classes.  The tutors know the course material, have experience navigating the challenges of assignments, technology, and time management, and provide an amazing resource for students.  I've been with the same peer tutor several times, and whether he joins a breakout group to help facilitate discussions and peer workshops, works one on one with students during class or office hours, or provides written feedback on students' essays, he's always happy to help.  The students have benefitted so much from the peer tutor support that they often write about their positive experiences in their course reflections at the end of the term. This is a really wonderful program and I'm so grateful to the peer tutors for their many contributions.”

“Having a peer tutor scheduled to join my class was extremely beneficial for students. I had a peer tutor come in on the days after Milestones were due. As the class reflected on the completed Milestone, the peer tutor could work with any students who didn’t finish the Milestone yet. They showed the students examples and gave tips from the perspective of someone who recently took the class. The students got to know the peer tutor this way and then began seeking their help in Study Tables as well.”

In addition to the Learning Support Specialists, our peer tutors are an excellent asset to students! Peer tutors are model students recommended by faculty and Learning Support who have excelled in the courses they support. They can also provide general writing and math support to our undergraduate students. You can find them in Study Tables Mondays-Fridays* from 1-5 pm CST.                                                                *With the exception of summer quarter and holidays.

Please see below for information about the individual peer tutors and the specific courses they support. To meet with a peer tutor, please join them virtually at Study Tables (or in person in the Learning Support space Room 6003 at 122 S. Michigan Ave.) as listed.
