Summer Reading Program

National Louis University’s Center for Literacy offers an individualized Summer Reading Program for students in grades one through twelve that provides intensive one-on-one support tailored to meet each student's individual needs. Students enrolled in this program receive diagnostic testing and one-to-one tutoring in reading and writing one hour per day, four mornings per week. Licensed teachers who are completing their graduate degrees in Reading serve as tutors under the supervision of a university professor.

WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER 2024

Children must attend each day for all five weeks.  See the informational flyer below for details on dates and times of sessions.

WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER 2024!
How to Apply
  1. Click here for the Parent Application. Complete and submit the entire parent portion of the application.

  2. The cost of the program is $200, which will be collected if and when your child is placed in the program. Payment must be made within 7 days of acceptance to secure your spot. Scholarships are available based on need.
  3. Send the link for the SRP School Application to your child’s teacher: School personnel are required to complete and submit the entire school portion of the application.

Note: The teacher(s) are to complete the school information portion of the application and submit supporting documentation (if necessary). Applications from parents who complete the school section will not be accepted. It is up to the person who is applying to send the link for the School Application to the teacher(s), as we do not do this on our end.

Placements: Each summer we have more requests for tutoring than we can fill. Therefore, we suggest that parents submit their portion of the application and send the link for the school’s portion to the child’s teacher(s) as soon as possible. Because we are a teaching institution, we are required to meet guidelines set forth by the Illinois State Board of Education and the International Literacy Association. Thus, we must match students and tutors according to those guidelines, which compels us to operate on a modified first-come-first-serve basis.

Parents will be notified by May 1, 2024 as to whether space is available for your child in the Summer Reading Program. If accepted, your child will be assigned to a one-hour session. We regret that we are unable to honor all requests for specific time slots. If space is not available, your child will be placed on a waiting list. Once students are placed and fees collected, we cannot return fees for withdrawals.

Applications are only complete when: 1) Parent application is received; and, 2) School application is received. All forms must be submitted no later than April 1, 2024.

Here's what parents are saying about NLU's Summer Reading Program:

“The program is strong and has a good reputation. For my child, the tutor really began instruction right at the point where my son was struggling. The report at the end of the program is useful to pass on to future teachers.” (Program Parent, 2021)

“I think this is a very valuable resource for any child. One-on-one, focused, individualized attention and teaching of reading and writing skills Over the summer, a time when most children tend to lose some of the mastery of the game during the year, is invaluable! Such a tremendous help!” (Program Parent, 2021)

“[My child] made great progress, it was fun and interactive for him, the 1:1 attention made him feel important and prioritized.” (Program Parent, 2021)

“...The 1-1 tutoring was excellent and the teachers are motivated to see growth in their students over a relatively short period of time.” (Program Parent, 2021)

“The intense one-on- one aspect was very beneficial. I noticed a big improvement when my daughter read aloud.” (Program Parent, 2021)

“My child's teacher created a relationship with my child. She got to know him as a person first to better understand who he was as a learner. She was able to fully engage him in the lessons, even when it was hard. My child came out of this program with far more self-confidence about his reading ability than ever before.” (Program Parent, 2020)

“I am SO thankful we had the opportunity to participate especially with the last half of the year being virtual. This experience gave both myself and [my child] the confidence and practice that will most certainly help her acclimate to 2nd grade.” (Program Parent, 2020)

“I wish this program could continue during the school year, as it was such a great benefit to my child.” (Program Parent, 2020)

“Thank you for allowing my child to participate in your program. The individualized attention is unmatched in other summer reading programs in Chicago and has made all the difference in the world to my child.” (Program Parent, 2020)
