Research and Interests:
Dr. Legler’s professional interests focus on the needs of children and youth in Chicago. This includes experience with school-community partnerships, after-school programs, and education policy. Recent work has involved support for a community-based project designed to build connections between the education system, the business community, and others to support the transition from high school to post-secondary education or training for students living in low-income communities. The Pathways to Success project worked to build connections between three Chicago Public high schools, local universities, and businesses in collaboration with the Bronzeville Community Action Council. The overall goal of the project was to help young people pursue skills that they need to compete in our economy, obtain sustainable employment, and escape or avoid poverty. A significant part of the project included visits by groups of students to local colleges including NLU, as well as trips to businesses in Chicago, to engage in conversations with college students and business professionals about post-secondary options and opportunities.
